Best Shenzhen Beach

Teaching English in Shenzhen comes with the obvious benefit of living in one of the most vibrant and fast growing cities in the world. One of the lesser known benefits is that you have a whole host of beautiful beaches to enjoy in your downtime. Some are close to the city, while others are remote, secluded and seem a world away from the fast paced city center. Here we take a look at three options that battle for the title of the best Shenzhen beach.

Best Shenzhen Beach

Dameisha Beach

Dameisha beach, one of the most popular beaches in Shenzhen.

Dameisha is a seaside area in the less populated Yantian district. Yantian holds a claim to be the most beautiful area of Shenzhen to live in, with much of the coastline offering panoramic views across Mirs Bay towards Hong Kong.
Dameisha is one of the largest beaches in Shenzhen, and its place in this discussion about the best Shenzhen beach is due to its proximity to the city center. Dameisha is the first beach that you will arrive at as you travel east, which makes it the most popular beach for locals and tourists alike. This means that you will have plenty of facilities nearby, such as restaurants, shops and bars.
However, the beach’s popularity does have one major drawback – overcrowding. In the summer it is not unusual to find literally thousands of people packed together on the sand. Fortunately, the climate in Shenzhen is such that you can still enjoy the sea as early as April and as late as October to dodge the crazy crowds.

Jiaochangwei Beach

Jiaochangwei beach in Dapeng district

If you decide to visit Dapeng Ancient City, you will be treated to one of the most rare things to find in Shenzhen – a taste of Ancient China! However, if you take a short walk from the ancient fortress and into Dapeng New District you will find a Shenzhen district that is modern, clean and equipped with a superb beach and fun promenade.
Jiaochangwei Beach is on the shores of Dongjia Bay, and the sea here is crystal blue and often very calm. The promenade that stretches along the beach offers various water sports activities, western food, ice cream stalls and a selection of very cool bars to spend the evening.
Dapeng is not too difficult to get to, but it can take a couple of hours depending on where you begin your journey. For this reason you may want to consider spending a couple of nights here, hotel rooms are cheap and readily available.

Xichong No. 4 Sand Beach

Xichong beach in Longgang district

Xichong Sand Beach is just about as far east you can go and still be in Shenzhen. In truth, it seems like a different planet from downtown Futian as the rapid modernization and expansion has yet to reach the far eastern shores of Longgang.
What this gives you is one of the most peaceful, calm and relaxed destinations that Shenzhen, and all of Guangdong, has to offer. The beach stretches on for miles and even when it is busy it gives the impression of being sparsely populated. There are a couple of beach bars dotted along the coast, and occasionally these play host to incredible live music until early in the morning.
Xichong is not easy to navigate to, and it is limited in the facilities it has to offer, but don’t let that stop you! Grab your sleeping bag, a tent, some drinks and some friends, and enjoy a wonderful, peaceful night under a starry Shenzhen sky!
